Book 1 now has a skeleton and some flesh growing around its spine (the analogy’s a bit gross, I know—you’ll live).
I’ve got all three acts arranged to produce a story structure that seems consistent (to me at least, but that’s a first step) and I think I’ll sketch out a rough outline of Book 2 before resuming writing. I need to know where I’m going. But, fingers crossed, I’m on the right track and it feels great.
