Betsy DeVos continues to dedicate her life to expanding charter schools and improving the state of education in the United States. She was born in Michigan to the Prince Family, and she attended the Christian Reformed Church when she was younger. She married Dick DeVos later in life, and the couple now call Grand Rapids, Michigan their home. Together, they have donated more than $139 million to various charitable causes and nonprofits including educational causes that are near and dear to their hearts.
It is not surprising that Betsy DeVos favors legislation that would help to offer equal educational opportunities to economically disadvantaged families. In Holland, Michigan, where she grew up, she was inspired by her peers and elders who had connections to the Netherlands. In the country’s past, it has held debates about which direction its public school system should head in. Liberals in the country argued that religious schools didn’t deserve to be equally funded by the public as public schools did. In response, a group was formed that supported school choice, and this group had very similar views to the educational choice movement of today.
Betsy DeVos was further inspired to support educational choice after attending Calvin College. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in business economics while studying at Calvin and also became very interested in the politics on the campus. After finishing her studies, she decided to dedicate her life to improving Michigan’s educational system as well as the educational system of the United States.
Betsy DeVos believes that there are many different ways to educate young students in the U.S. She has commented that digital learning is in its early stages but that this doesn’t mean it should be ignored. It is her opinion that it would be ridiculous to not use the power of computers and other digital devices to help instruct the younger generation. DeVos is also a supporter of homeschooling and sees it as a way for many parents to take their power back from a failing school system.
A lot of the work of Betsy DeVos has centered around promoting private and charter schools. She has supported politicians from many states who have pledged to work towards passing legislation that will help to pay for the tuition costs of these kinds of schools. While many of her detractors have mistakenly accused her of opposing the public school system, she has openly commented that most students in the U.S. will most likely continue to attend a public school. She has also commented that her main aim is to change people’s minds so they get over the outdated notion that their children must attend a school based solely on where their home is located.
Betsy DeVos served as the chairman for the Michigan Republican Party for six years in the past and also supported her husband, Dick, when he ran to serve as the state’s governor. She has spearheaded many different groups and organizations that support educational choice and has been a large part of successful efforts to pass laws that support students in the U.S.A. As the new secretary of education for the United States, she is ready to continue to fight for what she believes is right.
